Our mission is to enable every learner to thrive through personalised, experiential education, building confidence, independence and adaptability within a safe, nurturing environment. For learners aged between 9 and 18 years old with special educational needs, that kind of personalised, patient, and genuinely supportive approach is not a bonus. It is exactly what they deserve.

Belonging matters enormously for children with special educational needs. Many of the learners who come to us have spent time in schools where they felt out of place, misunderstood, or unable to cope with the demands placed on them. At Waterside School, we work hard to change that experience. Every learner is genuinely known, and their needs are properly understood. We build consistent, trusted relationships with every learner, because feeling safe and accepted is essential for children with SEND.
Engagement is something we think about carefully as a SEN school. Learners with special needs often experience learning very differently, and a traditional classroom approach does not always work. We design our days, our lessons, and our environment around what actually helps our learners engage. When a child with SEND is genuinely engaged, the progress they make can be remarkable.
We want every learner who passes through Waterside School to leave with more than academic knowledge. We work with learners to give them practical skills, the self-confidence, and the resilience to navigate adult life.

Our four values are known as CAKE. They guide how our staff work with learners every single day, and they give young people a shared language for understanding themselves and those around them. For families of children with special needs, they are a genuine reflection of the culture at Waterside School.
For many learners with special educational needs, school has not always felt like a safe or welcoming place. Coming back to learning, trying something unfamiliar, or simply asking for help takes real courage.
Here at Waterside School, we never underestimate how much bravery that requires. We celebrate it. We encourage every learner to keep going even when things feel hard, and we make sure they know that struggling with something is not a failure. It is part of learning, and we will be there with them through it.
Learners with special educational needs are so often expected to adapt themselves to fit a system that was simply not designed with them in mind, and for many families that experience has been exhausting and disheartening.
Our SEN school does things differently. We take the time to genuinely understand each learner, how they learn, what they find difficult, what helps them feel calm and ready, and we build everything around that. Our learners never have to mask who they are or pretend to cope when they are not. We want every learner here to feel comfortable in themselves, to develop a real understanding of their own needs, and to know that at Waterside School they are accepted exactly as they are. For many of the families we work with, that is one of the things that sets us apart most clearly.
The environment a learner with special educational needs learns in can make an enormous difference to how they feel about school, about themselves, and about their own potential. At Waterside School, kindness is not something we talk about occasionally. It is present in the way our staff speak to learners, in the way we support learners to build relationships with one another, and in the way we handle the moments that are difficult or unexpected. We know that many of the learners who come to us have had experiences of feeling unsafe, isolated, or misunderstood in previous settings, and rebuilding that sense of trust takes time and consistency. Parents and carers regularly tell us that the warmth of Waterside School is one of the first things they notice when they visit, and that means a great deal to us.
At Waterside School, we do not expect every learner to respond to learning in the same way, and we do not persist with an approach simply because it works for others. We understand that a traditional school structure does not always work for learners with special educational needs, which is why flexibility sits at the heart of how we approach learning. Our learners follow a full academic curriculum covering English, maths, science, PE, and more, but the way we deliver that curriculum looks quite different to a conventional school. Lessons are designed to be fluid, broken into manageable blocks that keep learners focused without overwhelming them, with regular breaks for regulation and play built into every day.
When something is not working for a learner, we look at why, we talk to them and their family, and we find a better way forward. We also work hard to nurture that same elasticity in our learners themselves, helping them to understand that setbacks and wrong turns are a natural part of learning, and that the ability to adapt, recover, and try again is one of the most valuable things they can take with them beyond their school day.
