Curriculum & Learning

Curriculum & Learning at Waterside School

Our curriculum is built specifically for learners with special educational needs across the Region. It is broad, it is purposeful, and it is delivered by specialists who genuinely understand the individual needs of each learner.

Our learners follow a full academic curriculum, delivered flexibly by specialist SEN teachers who understand how to make learning work for every individual.

Subjects include:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • PSHE
  • Arts and creative subjects
  • Physical education
  • Life skills
  • RISE communication curriculum
  • Perspectives discussion-based sessions
  • Enrichment activities

ICT and humanities are woven throughout these subjects rather than being taught in isolation, giving learners the opportunity to develop these skills naturally and in context.

We are proud that our learners access the same breadth of subjects as any good school. The difference at Waterside School is that every subject is adapted to suit the needs, communication style and learning profile of each learner.

Life skills are not an add-on at Waterside School. They are a central part of what we do every day.

Alongside the academic curriculum, we focus on building the practical skills and confidence that help learners navigate daily life and move towards greater independence for their adult life.

This includes:

  • Communication and self-expression
  • Self-management and emotional regulation
  • Building and maintaining relationships
  • Practical everyday skills for independent living
  • Preparation for adulthood and life beyond school

All our learners take part in a weekly timetabled enrichment session, following a structured five-year programme that is designed to broaden horizons and build aspirations.

Enrichment at Waterside School is about giving learners the chance to experience the wider world in a safe, supported and enjoyable way.

Activities and visits include:

  • Visits to public services including the police and fire service
  • Links with religious and community organisations
  • Careers experiences and encounters with employers
  • Team building and community building activities
  • Local visits and community engagement
