Our team thinks carefully about what life looks like for our learners beyond school. For learners with special educational needs, the skills, confidence, and self-awareness needed to navigate adult life matter greatly. That is why preparation for adulthood is not something we bolt on at the end of a learner's time with us. It begins early, and it runs alongisde our academic curriculum.

Preparation for adulthood at Waterside School is personalised to each individual learner. It is shaped by their communication style, their strengths, their interests, their sensory needs, and their support requirements. We do not apply a one-size-fits-all framework. Instead, we build a picture of each learner and use that to inform how we support them towards a future that is meaningful and achievable for them specifically.
Our teachers support every learner to explore what meaningful occupation looks like for them. For some SEN learners, that will mean moving towards paid employment. For others it might mean supported employment, volunteering, enterprise, or purposeful community activity. What matters is that every learner has the opportunity to see themselves as a valued contributor, whatever form that takes.
We teach the practical skills that support learners to live as independently as possible. This might include making choices, developing personal care routines, managing daily tasks, or communicating preferences and needs. Skills are taught practically, repeatedly, and in real-life contexts, because that is how they are most effectively learned and retained.
At Waterside School, we actively support learners to access and participate in their local community, building the confidence and skills to engage with the world around them.
Understanding and managing their own health and wellbeing is an important part of growing up for any learner, and particularly so for those with special educational needs. We support our learners to develop an awareness of their own health needs and the skills to communicate them effectively.

Communication and self-determination sit at the heart of our preparation for adulthood work. We support every learner to influence the decisions that affect their life and to express their aspirations in whatever way works best for them. That might look different from learner to learner, but the principle is the same: every learner at Waterside School deserves to be heard.
